Cultural Immersion at Shofukan – A Memorable Afternoon in Rotterdam

On Wednesday, 14 May 2025, guests gathered at the serene Shofukan Cultural Center in Rotterdam for an immersive and enriching afternoon celebrating Japanese tradition and hospitality provided a perfect setting for a well-curated event that seamlessly blended art, culture, cuisine, and martial arts in a tranquil atmosphere.

The event began as guests assembled in Shofukan’s peaceful garden, where they were welcomed into a calm and elegant environment. Erik Geerling, Chair of the RJC, opened the program with warm and thoughtful remarks that set the tone for the day, highlighting the spirit of cultural exchange and mutual appreciation.

Following this, Shofukan director Joris van Nipsen shared the story and mission of Shofukan with great insight and sincerity. His passion for promoting Japanese culture in the Netherlands was evident and deeply appreciated by all present.

Guests were then invited to explore the traditional Tea House, guided by Mr. van Nipsen, and to admire a stunning Ikebana display—the Japanese art of flower arrangement—introduced by Ms. Tini van de Wetering. This segment offered a serene moment of reflection and a deeper appreciation for the refined aesthetics of Japanese design and artistry.

At 12:30, a beautifully presented Japanese lunch buffet was served, offering a variety of authentic dishes.A highlight of the afternoon was the Kobudo workshop, led by Mr. van Nipsen. Guests had the opportunity to hold wooden swords and practice traditional Kobudo techniques. Guests had the rare opportunity to witness and engage in this traditional martial art, further enriching their understanding of Japan’s cultural heritage. The introduction of individual guests during the program added a personal touch and enhanced the sense of community.

Thanks to the dedication of Mr. Joris van Nipsen and Ms. Tini van de Wetering, the event was a beautifully organized and truly memorable experience—one that offered a meaningful cultural journey for all participants.

Beyond events like this, Shofukan plays an important role in fostering local community development. I believe these contributions meaningfully strengthen the ties between the Netherlands and Japan.
